Translating hospitality experience into retail and sales language
Receptionists, waiters, and bar staff already manage queues, upselling, cash, and difficult guests. Career changers often bury that experience under job titles that sound unrelated to retail or sales.
Map duties, not titles. Guest complaints become customer recovery. Suggesting wine pairings becomes consultative recommendation. Handling tour-group arrivals becomes peak-period coordination. Cash drawer responsibility and inventory of high-value stock are equally relevant to shop floors.
When writing an Anschreiben for a Verkauf or Innendienst role, pick two hospitality stories that match the posting and rewrite them in the employer’s vocabulary. Avoid claiming “sales experience” if you never owned a target — instead describe revenue influence you did have, such as average spend or repeat guest requests. Role transition coaching exists for people who need help choosing which stories to lead with across several applications.
